There is a side of Portugal that feels completely untouched by time. It is a place of beautiful landscape, golden light and a silence that feels like pure luxury. This is the Alentejo region. Deep in the heart of this landscape lies Herdade Malhadinha Nova, a stunning estate that completely changes what a rural wedding can be.
For Hans and Irene, this private vineyard was the perfect escape. Far away from the busy coast, they hosted a three-day celebration that was all about slowing down and being together. We captured their story with a focus on real connection and the natural beauty of the surroundings.
Why we love Herdade Malhadinha Nova
For couples who want something intimate but high-end, this place is a hidden gem. It mixes the charm of a working farm with the service of a top luxury hotel. When you book a wedding here, the estate becomes your own private village for the weekend. You can host up to 60 of your closest friends and family in the stylish villas.
The food here is also incredible. Because it is a working farm, the chefs use organic produce grown right on the estate. It is a dream for "foodie" couples who want to give their guests a real taste of Portugal.
For us as photographers, the landscape is inspiring. We are surrounded by vineyards and olive groves which create a soft, painterly backdrop for your photos. It is especially beautiful during the famous Alentejo sunset.
A Three-Day Celebration of Love
A destination wedding is really about spending quality time with your favorite people. Hans and Irene planned a weekend that felt effortless. It started with a relaxed welcome party with local wine and dancing under the stars. This gave everyone a chance to settle in and get to know each other.
The wedding day itself was full of emotion. The ceremony was set against the vast horizon of the plains. It was beautiful to see the tears and the unscripted moments of love. Working alongside the videographer Joao Rosa Visuals, we made sure to capture all the joy without being intrusive.
The weekend ended with a lazy poolside brunch. It was the perfect way to finish the celebration, sharing stories of the night before while relaxing in the sun.
Chasing the Alentejo Light
As a destination wedding photographer, I am always chasing good light. The light in Alentejo is unique. It is warm, dusty and incredibly flattering. For the couple portraits, we took a simple walk through the vineyards and the stables.
My goal was to capture the connection between Hans and Irene in a way that felt natural. I didn't want stiff poses, just them enjoying the moment. Even without Avieta by my side for this one, I had great support from my colleague Rui Vaz Franco. We ensured every angle was covered with our signature style.
